The Story So Far...

Although we have been established over 30 years with customers from all over the globe we remain very much a small family firm with just one workshop employing around 25 carpenters.

The furniture is made from solid Mango, a fruitwood with very interesting grain and great variety of figure and colour. It is a strong dense hardwood and comes from sustainably grown fruit plantations.

Our workshop is based in the amazing desert city of Jodhpur, Northern India, where we have an extremely talented team of  skilled craftsmen that we have been working with for over 25 years. Many have been with us since the start and they feel very much part of the family now!

Our roots go back to when we began making simple home accessories in MDF and then hand painting them to sell at craft and charity fairs. So many people asked where we got our items from, as they were interested in doing the painting for themselves, that we realised there was a whole new market selling some pieces as ‘ready to paint’.

It was not long before interior magazines picked up on this and started requesting items that they could then get their set decorators and stylists to paint, based on whichever colours suited the articles they were working on. Scumble Goosie started to become a regular name on the pages and to this day we are fortunate in receiving a lot of press coverage!

We still sell our furniture raw or painted, but now that we work almost exclusively in solid wood an increasing number of our customers buy our products and keep them in their natural state. We still do all the painting here in the Cotswolds and a number of different finishes can be supplied.

The Interview

Our Cotswolds Showroom

We are very lucky to be situated in the heart of the Cotswolds. Our showroom in Thrupp lies in one of the Stroud Valleys, steeped in history with its woollen cloth mills, beautiful stone cottages and rich cultural heritage.

Griffin Mill, a collection of mainly nineteenth century red brick former mill buildings, is now home to a number of interesting independent retailers. These including artists supplies and a superb paint and wallpaper shop. This makes a visit to Thrupp a very worthwhile experience if you are in the throes of redecorating your home.

Our showroom is often described as a ‘Tardis’! The outside gives very little away about the interior and we often hear gasps of surprise as customers walk through the doors and discover that there are so many displays and roomsets within.

Besides over one hundred different pieces of furniture on display, some raw and others painted, there are also hundreds of gifts and accessories, soft furnishings, fabric books, lamps and shades, and of course our extensive range of wall panelling which perfectly complements our furniture.
